Conderman Facial Plastic Surgery

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Refresh your gaze and restore a youthful, energized appearance with blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery. This highly effective procedure targets sagging upper eyelids, under-eye bags, and excess skin or fat that can make you look tired or older than you feel. By removing or repositioning this tissue, blepharoplasty creates a smoother, more alert eye contour while enhancing the natural shape of your eyes. The results are subtle yet striking—brightening your entire face and even improving vision in cases where drooping lids obstruct sight. With minimal downtime and long-lasting results, blepharoplasty is a powerful way to rejuvenate your look and renew your confidence.

Dr. Conderman's Approach

Understanding Eyelid Surgery

The primary goal of eyelid surgery for many patients is the improvement of early signs of aging. The procedure effectively addresses concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, under-eye bags, impaired vision due to hooding of the upper eyelid and brow, and the attainment of a more youthful and alert appearance. It provides a means to achieve a refreshed look that can boost confidence and positively impact first impressions in both business and social interactions. Furthermore, eyelid surgery can be combined with other cosmetic procedures to achieve a more comprehensive transformation.

Ideal candidates for blepharoplasty typically experience aesthetic and/or functional issues with their eyelids. While it is more commonly performed on middle-aged and older individuals, eyelid surgery can also be considered for younger patients, depending on the individual’s native anatomy. Ideal candidates should be in good health with no pre-existing conditions that could lead to complications during and after surgery.

During the consultation, Dr. Conderman will assess the eyelid and brow area, discuss your goals, and evaluate your overall health. Furthermore, the assessment of a proper candidate for blepharoplasty involves obtaining a detailed ophthalmologic (eye) history including any history of dry eyes, blurry or double vision and any medical condition(s) affecting the eyelids that could affect the outcome of the surgery.

As the position of the brow can impact the appearance of the eyelids, Dr. Conderman will perform a comprehensive assessment of the eyelid and brow area and will provide his assessment on which procedure would best fit your desired outcome (see also section on browlifting)

Upper Eyelid Surgery

This involves a strategically placed incision along the upper eyelid crease to access the underlying tissues. Excess skin and fat are precisely removed, addressing the droopy appearance of the eyes. In some cases eyelid ptosis (drooping) repair may be necessary and in some cases a drooping lacrimal (tear) gland may be involved in the appearance of a heavy upper lid.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

Dr. Conderman’s preferred approach to the lower lid is via a “scarless” approach and this involves making an incision on the inner surface of the eyelid.  This is called a transconjunctival approach and allows access to the lower lid fat pads in a safe and reliable manner.  Additionally, this reduces the risk of complications following eyelid surgery.  After the incision is made, excess fat is removed or repositioned and the incisions are meticulously closed.

No, eyelid surgery is designed to preserve your natural eye shape while making your eyes look more open and refreshed. Proper technique avoids an overcorrected or “wide-eyed” appearance.

Discomfort is generally mild and easily managed with prescribed medications and cold compresses. Many patients feel more annoyance from temporary swelling than actual pain.

Surgery can target either the upper lids, lower lids, or both. A personalized plan will be developed based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals for balanced, natural-looking results.

Recovery following eyelid lift surgery involves taking time off from work to rest and heal. Patients will require a friend or family member to drive them home, as they should not drive immediately following the procedure. Bruising and swelling around the eyes may be present, but these symptoms will subside within the first 10-14 days after surgery. Cold compresses can be used to facilitate this process, and maintaining an elevated head position is important. Dryness of the eyes may occur during healing, which can be managed as directed by Dr. Conderman.  Preservative free eye drops (e.g. refresh plus eye drops) can be very helpful during the recovery period. Similarly, arnica tablets or topical cream can help with bruising.

After about 10 days, patients can resume normal activities, but strenuous activities should be avoided for at least three weeks. While eyeglasses can be worn with caution, contact lenses are not advisable during the first two weeks. Sun overexposure should be avoided during the recovery period.
