Facelifts

A Facelift is a surgical procedure that aims to rejuvenate the tissues of the face and neck while creating a more youthful profile.  In some ways, the term facelift is a misnomer as a more comprehensive approach to the face, neck and brow is typically done to achieve a more lasting lift (see also sections on neck lift and brow lift *with links).  As a result, the tissues of not only the face are lifted but also those of the brow, neck and in some cases, eyelids to achieve a more harmonious and natural result.  A facelift can go by many names including a mini-lift, deep plane, and any number of procedures aimed at addressing the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System) including plication and imbrication.

Unlike traditional facelifts that only tighten the skin, SMAS facelifts go deeper, lifting and repositioning the underlying facial muscles and connective tissue for longer-lasting, more natural-looking results. This innovative approach smooths sagging skin, softens deep creases, and restores definition to the jawline and cheeks—all while preserving your unique facial expressions. Rejuvenate your look with the gold standard in facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Conderman's Approach

understanding FaceLifts

Facial aging is a complex process influenced by factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, sun exposure, and environmental stressors. Over time, the gradual loss of collagen and elastin leads to fine lines, wrinkles, and sagging skin. Facelifts offer a powerful solution to reverse these visible signs of aging by addressing not only excess skin, but also muscle laxity and fat displacement. Modern facelift techniques go beyond surface-level tightening and focus on the deeper structural layer of the face—the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system). By lifting and repositioning this foundational layer, surgeons achieve more natural, long-lasting results. Oftentimes, these surgical procedures are complemented with laser treatments or other skin-resurfacing methods, and/or fat grafting to achieve a comprehensive and refined approach to facial rejuvenation.

Dr. Conderman’s approach to facelifting has evolved over time and he is well versed in both traditional and more modern facelifting techniques. This technical evolution revolves around his approach to the SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer of the face. The SMAS is a fibroconnective and muscular tissue layer in the face and neck that is located deep to the skin’s outer layer. Facelifting techniques revolve around the depth of dissection and how the SMAS layer is manipulated and addressed at the time of surgery. During his fellowship training he gained extensive experience with a SMAS plication and imbrication technique and now largely performs deep plane facelifting techniques which allow for a more natural and long lasting result.

In addition to the techniques that more directly lift the face, Dr. Conderman employs methods of neck-rejuvenation at the time of facelifting, that include a platysmaplasty (tightening and suturing of the platysma muscles – a superficial muscle that can have a significant impact on the appearance of the neck), as well as surgical techniques to address the deeper structures of the neck that include descent of the submandibular glands, the digastric musculature and deeper fat layers.

The deep plane facelift approach focuses on the lower two-thirds of the face and neck, offering extended longevity and transformative effects. This technique involves simultaneous lifting of the SMAS and skin layers, leading to longer-lasting results. What sets it apart is its ability to combat the long-term effects of muscle movement on facial folds with a more natural repositioning of aging tissues in the face and neck.

Frequently Asked Questions

A facelift lifts and tightens sagging facial tissues to smooth wrinkles and restore a youthful appearance. It addresses jowls, deep folds, and neck laxity, often turning back the clock by about 10 years. Modern techniques focus on tightening deeper layers for natural results without a “pulled” look. Scars are discreetly hidden around the ears and hairline. Results typically last a decade or longer.

You may be a candidate if you have facial sagging, deep wrinkles, or jowls and are in good overall health. A consultation will evaluate your skin quality, facial structure, and aesthetic goals. Facelifts can be customized for mild or more advanced aging. Mini facelifts are an option for those with early signs of aging.

Swelling and bruising are significant the first week and gradually improve over several weeks. Most patients return to light activity after 7–10 days and resume full routines in about 3–4 weeks. Elevating your head and gentle movement help with healing. Final results continue to refine over several months.

Yes — the goal is a refreshed, natural appearance that enhances your features without changing your identity. Skilled techniques reposition underlying tissues instead of just pulling skin tight. Friends often notice you look well-rested, not surgically altered.

Facelift results usually last 10 years or more. Aging will continue, but you will always look younger than if you hadn’t had surgery. Good skincare, sun protection, and healthy lifestyle habits can extend your results even longer.

Swelling and bruising are expected during your facelift recovery and keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses will help to mitigate these discomforts. Over the course of the first 7-14 days, Dr. Conderman will see you frequently to ensure a proper post-operative recovery. Sutures will be removed within the first 5-10 days. This process ensures that the healing process is on track.

Initial results emerge when the bandages are removed, but the full transformation becomes evident over the subsequent weeks to months, as the post-operative swelling dissipates. Patients may continue to notice improvements in swelling over the course of 6-12 months.
